There are many excellent days of the year - the Great British Bake Off final, that first normal bin day after the confusing Christmas/New Year period, the winter solstice because days start getting longer -
And Apple Day! Celebrated on October 21st, Apple Day is a global celebration of the apple that recognizes its history, diversity, and culinary versatility. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of apple cultivation, biodiversity, and sustainable farming. The day was initiated in the United Kingdom in 1990, so we're celebrating it's 34th year! Which is pretty cool, I think.

To celebrate, I thought I'd leave you guys with some of my favourite cider/appley facts that I've picked up over the years. Some of these make for really good conversation starters - People seem to have a lot of feelings about their apple trees.
We drink more cider than every other country combined. They don't call us Great Britain for nothing, seriously.
Cider became really popular because we kept going to war with everyone that made wine. So we called cider "apple wine" to make ourselves feel better.
The first record of cider being used as a form of payment was back in 1204-ish. This was a great way to pay your farmhands, but it did become responsible for quite a few accidents - If you were a super-duper worker, you could get about 8 pints as day. The Truck Act banned this in 1887 and ruined all the fun.
Craft cider is making a comeback. For years, cider has only had to be 35% juice - and even that can be apple juice from concentrate - with the remaining 65% being made up of water, sulphites, sugar, preservatives, etc. So we forgot what cider should actually taste like and started associating it with stinking headaches, etc. But there's a shift - more and more people are looking for proper apple juice and proper cider.
We have over 2,500 various indigenous species of apple in the UK. I can't remember if this is a lot, but it sounds it.
Anyway, those were my fave cidery/appley fun facts! If you're in Hay and you fancy a taste, we'll be celebrating Apple Day this Saturday (26th!) and getting the testers out. Come say hi!
All the bestest,
Tash xox
